PDP chieftain Jaafar Bello has stated that the North possesses the electoral strength to dominate presidential elections if it chooses to field candidates in every contest.
Speaking during an interview with TRUST TV, on Saturday May 23 2026, Bello described democracy as a system founded on majority rule while also safeguarding the interests of minority groups.
He explained that Nigeria’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity informed the decision by political leaders to adopt a power-sharing arrangement through rotational leadership. He said the agreement represents a significant sacrifice by the North in the interest of national unity and stability.
In his words, “The North said, ‘We are in a country with diverse backgrounds, diverse faiths and diverse ethnicities.
