Chika Okeke, co-host of the popular daytime programme YourView, has shared an emotional account of her journey from rejection and hardship to becoming one of the most recognized faces on Nigerian television. Speaking candidly during an episode of the show, which airs on TVC Communications, Okeke revealed how becoming pregnant at 19 dramatically changed the course of her life.
According to her, she was still a university student when she discovered she was pregnant. At the time, she said she was filled with uncertainty, fear, and anxiety about what the future would hold. The situation became even more difficult when her boyfriend denied responsibility for the pregnancy and urged her to terminate it.
Despite the pressure, Okeke said she made a firm decision to keep the baby.
“I got pregnant at 19, my boyfriend denied it and my family sent me out,” she said, recalling the moment that forced her to confront adulthood much earlier than she had expected.
Her decision, however, came with immediate consequences. She revealed that her family reacted strongly after learning about the pregnancy and asked her to leave their home. Suddenly without family support, Okeke found herself alone and uncertain about her next steps.
She said one of her friends from school became her only source of support during that period, offering her temporary accommodation. Even with that help, she described the experience as deeply isolating.
“It was lonely and difficult,” she explained, noting that she had to quickly adapt to the realities of survival and responsibility at a young age.
Determined not to give up, Okeke began working toward rebuilding her life. She secured a teaching job, which provided her with a modest but steady income. Through careful saving and discipline, she was eventually able to rent a small apartment of her own, where she prepared for the arrival of her child.
She later gave birth safely and chose a meaningful traditional Igbo name for her daughter a name that translates to “God has the final say.” According to her, the name symbolized her faith, resilience, and belief that her life could still take a positive direction despite the rejection she had experienced.
Okeke said the experience transformed her perspective on life and forced her to mature quickly. She explained that becoming a mother at such a young age taught her responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of self-belief.
