Kunle Kuti, one of the sons of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, has stated that he was in primary school when soldiers attacked his father’s house and studio known as Kalakuta in 1978.
In a video shared by The Cable on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Kunle said the soldiers burnt down Kalakuta and destroyed the place. He stated that at the time, his family members were not even sure Fela would come out alive because of how badly the building was damaged after the attack.
Kunle said he still wonders why about one thousand soldiers were sent to capture only Fela. He stated that he believes the aim was to silence Fela by any means.
In Kunle’s words: “They burnt Kalakuta. So We did not even know Fela would make it because the aftermath of Kalakuta, when you go to the building (sic). My problem is how would you send a thousand soldiers to get one person. I believe they just wanted to silence him by any means, because what would make them take that kind of decision to send a thousand to get someone dead or alive just because of a minor traffic offense”……..See More
