Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has questioned the effectiveness of Nigeria’s police after recounting an episode that left foreign visitors surprised by confrontations between civilians and officers.
In an interview on THE VOLUME POD, Sowunmi said he once hosted Russian friends in Lagos who, upon returning to London, described what they had seen in Nigeria as strange. He said that their reaction followed scenes in which ordinary civilians appeared to be physically engaging with police officers.
Sowunmi used the anecdote to make a broader point about security roles, stressing that the police, not the military, should be the first responders to crime.
He said, “I invited some of my friends into the country some years back; they are Russians — they hadn’t been to Nigeria, big boys. They stayed in Lagos. When they got back to London, I went to meet them, and they said ‘Your country is funny’. I said, what? They said, ‘Is it that the guns in the hands of your police are fake, or your people are just unduly brave? He said they saw the way ordinary civilians were dragging with police.”……..See More
