Princess Adenike Adedoyin-Ajayi, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Civil Service, has shared the response her son gave her when she asked him why he needed a phone.
Speaking in an interview on TALK TO B shared on Friday, May 8, 2026, Adenike stated that her son did not get a phone until he was 15 because she wanted him to learn discipline and responsibility. She explained that he used his pocket money to save for the phone himself.
According to her, seeing his effort and patience made her agree to let him have one. Adedoyin-Ajayi said she later asked him why he wanted a phone and expected him to say it was because his friends had one. But his answer surprised her.

“My son didn’t have a phone until he was 15. And that phone, he paid for it because I told him, ‘You would have it. You have your pocket money, so start saving towards it.’ He saved towards it, and because I saw his heart of dedication, the way he was genuinely, you know, paying and all of that, I then asked him, ‘Why do you need a phone? Why are you so interested in having a phone?’ The answer he gave me made me feel comfortable. He said, ‘Oh, mom, it’s not because all my friends have one,’ because from a very, very young age, he already knows the difference between a need and a want.”…….See More
