First lady of Ogun State, Bamidele Abiodun, says she proudly sees herself as an Ibadan girl because she attended primary school, secondary school and university in the city, even though she was not born there.
She explained that her family lived in Bodija, then Kongi, before later moving into the University of Ibadan environment during her teenage years, and that safe, communal setting shaped her childhood values and outlook on life.
Abiodun said her parents insisted on Yoruba at home to the point where she spoke the language fluently before she even understood English, and she now believes many Nigerian parents are doing their children a disservice by speaking only English to them.
She said those early years, when children could ride bicycles freely, explore bush paths and grow up as part of a close-knit community, are very different from the world her own children are growing up in today.
First Lady of Ogun State, Bamidele Abiodun, said: “I am proudly an Ibadan person, an Ibadan girl. I went to primary school, secondary school, university in Ibadan. I also proudly say that Yoruba was my first language; I could speak Yoruba fluently before I could even understand English, and I think we are doing our children a great disservice these days when we think it is just English we should speak to them.”…….See More
