Kunle Kuti, one of the sons of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, has stated that soldiers assaulted his grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, during the 1978 attack on Kalakuta
In a video shared by The Cable on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Kunle said the soldiers threw Funmilayo down from the second floor of a building. He stated that she later died from complications caused by the injuries she suffered. He explained that Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was among those who negotiated for Nigeria’s independence
Kunle said that after the attack, the military government froze Fela’s assets and seized his land. He stated that a decree was also made that no landlord or land owner should rent a place to Fela so Fela had no choice but to move to Ghana.
