APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe has renewed his criticism of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing the former presidential candidate of benefiting personally from the sale of government agencies during his time in office.
Igbokwe made the allegation in a post shared on his Facebook account on October 2, 2026, while commenting on Atiku’s political activities and his record in government. He argued that Nigerians should consider the former Vice President’s past public service record when assessing his current political ambitions.
“He sold many agencies of government and pocketed the money,” Igbokwe stated.
The APC chieftain’s latest comment forms part of his broader criticism of Atiku. Igbokwe has previously questioned whether the former Vice President should be trusted with managing Nigeria’s finances, citing what he described as Atiku’s record and antecedents in government.
Atiku served as Vice President under former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007. During that period, the Federal Government implemented several economic reforms, including a major privatisation programme involving government-owned enterprises.
Atiku also served as chairman of the National Council on Privatisation for much of his tenure as Vice President. The council played a significant role in overseeing the Federal Government’s privatisation programme.
The sale of government-owned enterprises during the Obasanjo administration has remained a subject of political discussion in Nigeria, particularly regarding the valuation of public assets, the beneficiaries of the transactions and the roles played by government officials.
Igbokwe’s latest statement brings those historical issues back into the political debate surrounding Atiku and his activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, his claim that Atiku personally “pocketed the money” is an allegation made by Igbokwe and has not been established as a fact by the information provided. The statement should therefore be understood as a political accusation rather than an independently verified finding.
Igbokwe has also continued to refer to Atiku’s relationship with Obasanjo, describing the former president as Atiku’s principal during their years in government.
His latest remarks add to the growing political exchanges surrounding Atiku as parties and political figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
