According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Arise News on Thursday, July 23, 2026, policy strategist Baba Yusuf has called for a political and developmental reawakening in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2031 presidential election.
Speaking during a discussion on power rotation and the emerging political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election, Yusuf said the North must use the coming years to reflect on its leadership choices and address the internal challenges affecting the region.
He argued that the emergence of another Northern president would not automatically resolve the problems confronting the region, particularly poverty, insecurity, poor governance and underdevelopment.
According to him, Northern leaders and citizens must focus on developing a better leadership recruitment process and a clear strategy for the future.
He said, “The North should have a reawakening by 2031; otherwise, 10 years or 15 years of a Northern president will not help us.”
Yusuf stressed that the North should use the next four years to reflect, reset and develop a new political direction before seeking the presidency again.
He also noted that the region’s governors would play a crucial role in addressing the challenges facing Northern Nigeria, insisting that the responsibility for development should not rest solely on the president.
