I Must Confess, SA Has Been Hostile To Foreigners, They Don’t Want To Hear The Name “Nigeria” -Returnee, Rita

South African returnee, Rita, has alleged that South Africa has become increasingly hostile towards foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, citing her personal experience while living in the country.

Speaking during an interview on Vanguard News TV, Rita reflected on the treatment of foreigners in South Africa, saying many immigrants face discrimination and hostility despite relocating to the country in search of better opportunities.

She said, “The country has been hostile I must confess to foreigners especially Nigerians. They don’t just like to hear that name” Nigeria” at all.”

According to Rita, the hostility has made life difficult for many Nigerians residing in South Africa, with some living in fear due to anti-foreigner sentiments. Although she did not provide specific incidents to support her claim, she maintained that Nigerians are among the groups most affected by the unfriendly environment.

Her remarks come amid longstanding concerns over the safety and welfare of foreign nationals in South Africa. Over the years, reports of xenophobic attacks and tensions involving migrants have drawn attention from governments, civil society organisations and international observers, prompting repeated calls for stronger protection of foreign residents.
