President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, April 21 approved a minor cabinet reshuffle, resulting in changes to the Federal Executive Council.
According to Vanguard, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, was directed to step down and hand over duties as part of the adjustment aimed at strengthening economic management.
In a statement by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Taiwo Oyedele was announced as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
He is expected to oversee fiscal policy direction and coordinate national economic strategy following the transition.
Oyedele, an experienced tax and fiscal policy expert, previously served as Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PwC.
He has advised governments across Africa, contributed to tax harmonisation within ECOWAS, and participated in several national and international policy institutions including ICAN and the Nigerian Taxation Standards Board.
Over the years, he has been involved in major tax reform initiatives, including the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.
His work has focused on simplifying tax systems, improving revenue collection, and promoting economic growth. He is also known for academic contributions and leadership in professional bodies and foundations.
Analysts say the appointment signals a continued push by the Tinubu administration to implement broad fiscal reforms and improve efficiency in public finance management amid economic challenges.
It also reflects ongoing efforts to streamline overlapping tax agencies, enhance transparency, and attract investment through policy stability.
Oyedele’s elevation is expected to accelerate implementation of previously proposed tax harmonisation measures and digital revenue systems across federal institutions, positioning Nigeria’s economy for long-term restructuring and growth.
