In a video shared by Splash FM 1055, Olusegun Obasanjo stated that when he was president he was criticized for appointing Chukwuma Soludo as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Finance Minister
Obasanjo said during his time in office Soludo worked closely with him as his economic adviser and never gave him bad advice. He said he was impressed by Soludo’s performance and later made him the Governor of CBN.
However, Obasanjo said shortly after that someone told him that he had ruined Nigeria’s economy by appointing an Igbo woman, Ngozi, as Finance Minister and an Igbo man, Soludo, as CBN governor. He added that Soludo and Ngozi performed very well in their roles
In Obasanjo’s words: “On one occasion soon after I appointed him somebody came to me and said ‘You have ruined the economy of Nigeria’. I said how. He said ‘An Igbo woman Minister of Finance, an Igbo man Governor of Central Bank. Then you have really completed the task of ruining the economy of Nigeria. Now I don’t know why he said that, except for what I call Igbophobia”
