Biodun Stephen, a Nollywood actress and producer, has stated that she underwent female circumcision when she was six years old.
In an interview with Dairy Of A Naija Girl, Stephen said it was her grandmother who paid for her to be circumcised. She said her mother was also circumcised, adding that it was a cultural practice in her family
Stephen stated that she remembers the pain vividly. She said it was done outside on a mat and that she can still picture the scene in her mind.
Stephen further stated that she only later understood what female genital mutilation meant when she became older, and that was when she realized that it was exactly what had been done to her as a child.
In Stephen’s words: “In my own case it was my grandma. I think that also my mom was (sic). So it is a culture for them because I remember that I was 6 years old when I went for circumcision.
