Gift Aniogba, a victim of domestic abuse, has narrated how her husband poured acid on her and his friend, and also stole from her.
In an interview on the Brekete Family human rights programme, Gift said her husband used to beat her regularly. She said one day she was sitting at home with her husband’s friend, Baba Chinaza, and they were talking and laughing together. She said they suddenly saw her husband come in carrying a bottle and they did not know the bottle contained acid.
Gift said that while she and Baba Chinaza were chatting and laughing, her husband suddenly poured the liquid on her face. She said it felt hotter than fire and she could not breathe. She said her husband then took her phone and bag and escaped on a bike.
Gift said Baba Chinaza also ran away after the acid touched him, leaving her alone inside screaming until she managed to get outside and neighbors rushed her to the hospital.
In Gift’s words: “We didn’t know that it was acid my husband was carrying in the bottle, he put it in an origin bitters bottle so we thought it was a drink. So me and Baba Chinaza were just chatting and laughing. The next thing, my husband poured it on my face, it was hotter than fire. I couldn’t breathe. I just started staggering. I couldn’t see the road anymore but I knew where water was so I tried to rush there. Even as I was struggling to get there, my husband poured the remaining acid on my back.
