“My Husband Believed In Me, And I Became The First Female Pilot” -Chinyere Kalu Shares Her Story

Aviation pioneer Chinyere Kalu has emphasized the role her husband played in her historic journey into aviation. Speaking during an interview on the HappilyTogether YouTube channel, she said, “My husband believed in me, and I became Nigeria’s first female pilot.”

Captain Kalu explained that her husband’s encouragement gave her the confidence to pursue aviation at a time when very few Nigerian women considered careers in the field. She described their 42-year marriage as being built on mutual respect, prayer, and understanding. According to her, that foundation made it possible to balance professional ambition with family life. At one stage, she temporarily stepped away from active flying duties to focus on her family before later returning to continue her career.

With that support system in place, she advanced steadily in the aviation sector. She recalled her first solo flight as a defining moment that strengthened her determination. Entering a male-dominated industry required discipline, focus, and resilience, qualities she said helped her navigate professional challenges.

Beyond becoming Nigeria’s first female pilot, Captain Kalu also served as a flight instructor and later held key administrative roles within the aviation sector. Her contributions were nationally recognized when she was among 100 distinguished Nigerians honored by former President Goodluck Jonathan during the Nigerian Centenary Awards.
