According to an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Prof. Femi Otunbajo, a research professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, spoke with journalist Oseni Rufai on issues surrounding governance, corruption and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
During the discussion, Otunbajo argued that Nigeria is experiencing a deep leadership crisis, insisting that corruption has become entrenched across different levels of government.
While speaking, he referenced a previous Arise Television broadcast in which Rufai discussed allegations involving former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
Otunbajo maintained that the country’s challenges go beyond the actions of one individual, saying corruption has become a wider problem affecting public institutions and national development.
“We are in a desperate situation where leadership has failed and where democracy is failing. That is the reality that we face. I saw you the last time almost crying when you read about the kind of things that Malami stole from Nigeria, and Malami is not alone,” he said.
