During an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, argued that Nigeria’s economic challenges are rooted in poor governance rather than a lack of resources, using Iran’s fuel pricing as an example.
Sowore said that despite the pressures of conflict, Iran has managed its economy in a way that keeps fuel prices relatively low for its citizens. He contrasted this with Nigeria, where he argued that rising crude oil prices have not translated into better living conditions for ordinary people. He also claimed that some beneficiaries of Nigeria’s oil sector profit whenever global crude prices rise due to international tensions.
