Political commentator Henry Shield has criticized Nigeria’s opposition parties, describing them as weak, uninspiring, and ineffective in challenging the ruling government.
Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI TV, Shield argued that Nigeria does not have a strong opposition but only prominent opposition leaders who have failed to provide the leadership needed to challenge the ruling party.
According to him, despite widespread public concerns over issues such as the rising cost of fuel and the country’s economic challenges, the opposition has not taken the kind of coordinated action required to hold the government accountable.
Shield said that if a general election were held today, President Bola Tinubu would win by a wide margin. He stressed that such a victory would not necessarily be because the President has performed well or because voters are fully satisfied with his administration.
Instead, he argued that the opposition has failed to develop an effective strategy capable of defeating the ruling party. He maintained that opposition parties must move beyond public criticism and begin taking practical, organized steps that can convince Nigerians they are a credible alternative.
Shield concluded that until the opposition changes its approach and becomes more active and strategic, it will continue to struggle to compete effectively against the ruling party in future elections.
