According to a report by Trust TV, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Gilbert Major, alleged that some police officers involved in illegal extortion carry Point of Sale (POS) machines while carrying out their official duties.
Dr. Major made the claim during an interview Trust TV while reacting to reports that four police officers in Abuja were detained over the alleged extortion of the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu.
Speaking during the interview, Dr. Major said such incidents were not new in the country.
According to him, many Nigerians have experienced similar situations in different parts of the country.
In his words, “But we have had instances where these policemen who go out on official duties also carry with them their own POS their own.”
He explained that, based on what he has heard from members of the public, some officers allegedly ask people to make payments after arresting or stopping them, even when they have not committed any offence.
He said some victims are allegedly told to use a POS machine to make payments before they are allowed to leave.
Dr. Major added that many Nigerians watching the interview would understand what he was talking about because, according to him, such complaints have been made by members of the public over the years.
He also welcomed the action taken against the four police officers arrested in Abuja.
According to him, the case should serve as a warning to other officers who may be tempted to misuse their uniforms or positions.
The NNPP chairman said security personnel are employed to protect citizens and enforce the law, not to intimidate or unlawfully collect money from members of the public.
The comments came after the Federal Capital Territory Police Command announced the detention of four officers accused of conducting an unauthorized stop-and-search operation during which they allegedly extorted money from the ICPC chairman without knowing his identity.
