Senator Adams Oshiomhole has pointed out that state governments actually spend far more on procuring operational vehicles and communication gadgets for the federal police than the federal government does itself. He argued that the argument against state police based on a lack of funding is invalid, because states already shoulder the financial burden of equipping the current centralized system.
Speaking during an interview, he explained that despite states investing heavily in security infrastructure, governors have no legal authority to intervene when those vehicles are mismanaged or misappropriated. He asserted that funding is simply a reflection of a government’s priorities, meaning states would find the resources to run their own police forces if granted the constitutional right to do so.
In Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s words: “I can tell you as a former governor, and current governors may dispute it if they so wish, but in truth, the amount of money I had to spend to procure vehicles and communication gadgets as governor of Edo State was much more than the federal government vehicles that we had in Edo State.”
Lamenting the lack of control over these investments, he added: “Unfortunately, my responsibility ends at procuring these vehicles. When they are misused, they are mismanaged, and I even suspect that they are stolen by those who are supposed to maintain them, I do not have the legal enablement to go beyond asking questions to enforcing discipline……See More
