Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has claimed that former Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, died of cardiac arrest while with a pharmacist inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Amachree made the claim in his new book, where he described what he said happened in the early hours of June 8, 1998.
According to him, Abacha’s girlfriend arrived at the Aso Rock Guest House with her younger sister, a pharmacist who was in Abuja for a conference. He said the girlfriend later returned to her hotel, leaving her sister behind with the military ruler.
Amachree stated that at about 4:05 a.m., while the two were together, the pharmacist noticed that Abacha had suddenly stopped moving. He said she checked for a pulse, found none, became frightened, got dressed, and left the villa after telling a soldier that Abacha had asked for a vehicle to take her back to her hotel.
He added that the pharmacist informed her sister about what had happened before leaving Abuja on an early morning flight to Lagos.
Amachree also claimed that by the time Abacha’s Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was informed around 5:00 a.m., the pharmacist had already left the city. He said security officials later tried to locate her at the hotel but discovered she had already departed for Lagos.
