According to a report by The Vanguard on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Federal Government is currently facing a delicate hostage crisis in Oyo State, where armed bandits have threatened to execute abducted pupils and teachers if security forces attempt a rescue operation.
Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), disclosed the harrowing situation in a preview of an upcoming interview on News Central’s NC Exclusive programme.
According to the Minister, the criminals are leveraging the lives of the 39 pupils and seven teachers—who were abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15—to force the release of their high-ranking commanders currently in military custody.
“For whatever reason, they are looking for leverage because we have some of their commanders with us, and they feel taking these kids and holding them to ransom will make us release their commander,” Musa explained.
He confirmed that the abductors have issued a direct warning: any military advancement toward their hideout will result in the immediate death of all captives.
Addressing the broader issue of surging national insecurity, the Minister firmly advocated for the implementation of the death penalty for convicted kidnappers and terrorists.
He argued that the current legal framework is too lenient, failing to provide the necessary deterrence required to curb such violent crimes.
“I think we should do that. There must be deterrence. The laws are soft, and that’s why people take advantage,” Musa stated.
As the eight-week mark since the abduction passes, the government remains under immense pressure to secure the safe return of the victims while navigating the dangerous demands of the kidnappers.
The Minister’s remarks underscore the intense complexity of military operations against non-state actors who prioritize human shields over civilian lives……See More
