Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his record in public office while responding to criticism over the savings he left for Anambra State after completing his tenure.
Speaking during an interview on With Chude, Obi said he chose to save money for the state in both naira and foreign currency because he believed it was the right thing to do. He argued that instead of being praised for protecting public funds, he was criticised and called different names.
Obi also rejected suggestions that he personally benefited from his years in government. He pointed to his long career in the banking sector, where he served as a chairman and director of banks, and challenged anyone to show evidence that any bank bought him a car because of his position.
The former governor further defended his handling of land matters in Anambra State. He said he signed thousands of Certificates of Occupancy during his administration but insisted that no land was allocated to him either directly or indirectly. He added that if anyone could prove otherwise, he would quit politics.
Obi maintained that the important issue was ensuring public money remained safe. He questioned why the funds he saved for Anambra State were not preserved by those who succeeded him, arguing that the money could have remained in any secure bank as long as it was protected.
