Dr. Joseph Gowon, a retired Nigerian soldier and veteran of the Civil War, has stated that Biafra received strong foreign backing during the war.
In an interview with The Yellow Mic Podcast, Gowon stated that he was the youngest Nigerian soldier to enter Biafran territory during the war, and he was among the federal troops that captured Nsukka. He said most of the military equipment used by Biafra, including guns, bullets and uniforms, came from the United States.
Gowon also stated that countries such as France, Germany and Rome strongly supported Biafra.
In Gowon’s words: “The Igbos during the war were so powerful in terms of technical education, they were even becoming more stronger than America that was the one engineering them. I was the youngest soldier to enter Biafra and I was in front of the soldiers. All their equipment, the guns, the bullets and uniforms were all from USA. America was 100 percent behind Biafra”
