Former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised emerging political coalitions being formed ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, saying they are largely driven by the pursuit of political power rather than genuine reform.
He made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, The Morning Brief, on Monday.
His comments come amid increasing political realignments among opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the next election cycle.
Sowore said many of the politicians involved in the new alliances are long-standing participants in Nigeria’s political system rather than fresh entrants.
He argued that the coalitions do not represent a new political direction capable of addressing the country’s long-standing challenges.
He added that Nigerians have become more politically aware and may not easily accept alliances formed by recycled political actors.
According to him, political coalitions should be judged not only by their promises but also by the records and backgrounds of those involved.
The comments come as opposition politics continues to shift ahead of the 2027 elections, with several prominent figures realigning across parties and coalitions.
Earlier in 2025, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso joined a coalition within the African Democratic Congress aimed at forming a united opposition front.
However, internal disagreements later caused divisions, leading Obi and Kwankwaso to exit the ADC and move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Sowore said Nigerian voters are becoming more discerning and warned that coalitions formed by familiar political elites may fail to gain public trust……See More
