According to a report by The Cable on Sunday, May 10, 2026, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has expressed confidence that Nigeria will experience free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
He stated that the country still has the capacity to strengthen its democratic process if proper systems are put in place and leadership remains accountable.
He made the remarks during the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress held on Saturday, where political leaders and delegates gathered to discuss national issues and the future of governance.
Obi explained that Nigeria’s current challenges are not mainly caused by lack of resources but by systemic issues affecting governance and public administration.
He stated that the country has abundant human and natural resources, but inefficiency and poor management have continued to limit national progress.
According to him, addressing these challenges requires a shift towards accountability and a stronger focus on productivity-driven economic policies that can support sustainable development.
He also highlighted concerns about the rising levels of poverty, unemployment and insecurity affecting millions of Nigerians across different regions.
Obi noted that despite the country’s potential for growth, many citizens are struggling with economic hardship and limited opportunities.
He stated that improving governance structures and ensuring transparency in public spending are necessary steps toward addressing these issues and improving the living conditions of citizens.
During his address, Obi also responded to concerns about the possibility of credible elections in 2027.
He dismissed suggestions that the electoral process may not be transparent or fair, insisting that Nigerians will still have the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.
He emphasized that democratic participation remains a key part of the country’s political system and that efforts must continue to protect the integrity of elections at all levels.
He further stated that those who doubt the possibility of free and fair elections in the coming electoral cycle should reconsider their position.
According to him, the strength of democracy depends on the willingness of institutions and citizens to uphold electoral laws and ensure that the process is not compromised.
He added that with the right commitment from electoral bodies and political stakeholders, Nigeria can conduct elections that reflect the true will of the people.
He said, “Those who think we will not have free and fair election in 2027, let them rethink now, because in 2027, we are going to have free and fair and credible election.”…….See More
