In a recent interview on Edmund Obilo’s podcast, Jack Adokiye, one of the soldiers involved in the failed Gideon Orkar coup of April 22, 1990, opened up about the dramatic events that almost toppled General Ibrahim Babangida’s government.
Adokiye explained that he was not fully convinced about removing Babangida because he was unsure of the level of preparation behind the coup. According to him, he found himself caught up in a situation he never planned for.
He revealed that Captain Empereode, one of the key coup members, tricked him into joining. At one point, the tension was so high that Adokiye said he even considered firing at Empereode for misleading him. “I wanted to even spray Captain Empereode, for deceiving me, he has roped me into something I didn’t plan for,” he admitted.
Adokiye recalled that although he had a gun and ammunition, he never truly prepared for such a dangerous mission. Unlike others, he did not even pack away his valuable belongings, something he compared to how a robber prepares for a risky operation, where you either succeed or lose your life.
He also said he refused to touch the money given to him as part of the coup arrangement. “The money was in the house. I didn’t remove anything,” he said, stressing that he never planned to fully commit to the mission…….See More
