Julius Malema, a leading opposition figure in South Africa, will appear in court again today, Thursday, as prosecutors urged the court to impose the minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment over an incident in which he fired a rifle into the air during a political rally.
According to Reuters, Malema, widely regarded as one of the country’s most high-profile politicians, had been found guilty last year on charges that included illegal possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public space, stemming from the 2018 event.
The 45-year-old politician, who heads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)—the fourth-largest party in parliament—had denied the allegations during trial, maintaining that the firearm in question was not real but a toy.
However, while he was reacting to the development on his verified X handle, Senator Shehu Sani wrote, “Comrade Julius Malema has always sided with Nigerians whenever they are attacked by his fellow South Africans. Against the odds, he has always spoken good about Nigerians. He is in Court today about to be sentenced. Why not crowd the Social Media in Solidarity with the Comrade. He was always there for our people, time to reciprocate.”……See More
