According to Fox News, on Thursday 16 April, 2026, in a conversation with a reporter, President Trump addressed concerns voiced by a group of bishops who described the Pope’s statements as more than just expressing personal views; they said that the Pope was actively spreading the Gospel.
The journalist wanted to know his strategy for dealing with those who think that way.
Trump responded by stressing his admiration for the Pope’s religious function while arguing that the pope’s views do not supersede his own views on international security.
The speaker expressed his desire for him to share the gospel. The Gospel is everything to me.
But he soon changed gears to address what he considers a critical geopolitical danger, arguing that some countries should not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons.
One such nation was characterised by Trump as “a very mean-spirited country,” and the president warned of dire repercussions should the country acquire nuclear weapons.
He claims the danger is real and serious, rather than hypothetical.
“If they did, they would use it,” he said. Plus, I have the impression that they would put it to good use promptly, killing millions.
His comments emphasised the fear that nuclear weapons may cause widespread devastation if they fell into the wrong hands.
Trump supported the freedom to dissent, but also recognising that the Pope might have a different view.
“The Pope could disagree with me on that, but certainly we’re allowed to have that.” He made notice of the fact that different opinions are an integral aspect of free speech.
