Oru-Igbo Is Close To Ocean, When People Say Igboland Is Landlocked It’s A Political Statement -Onumonu

Dr Ugo Onumonu, the Head of Department of History and International Studies at Adeleke University in Osun State, has stated that Igboland is not truly landlocked as some people claim.

In an interview on the State Affairs Show with Edmund Obilo, Onumonu said that the distance from Oru-Igbo in Imo State to Bonny Island which is situated directly on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in the Niger Delta region of Rivers State is just 16 nautical miles

Onumonu stated that this shows how close Igboland is to the ocean. He said when people describe Igboland as landlocked, it is a political statement rather than a geographical fact. He also said such claims are often made to make Ndigbo feel disadvantaged.

In Onumonu’s words: “It is just 16 nautical miles from Oru-Igbo to Atlantic ocean, to Bony Island. It is very close. In fact, all over Igboland they are very close to the ocean, to Bony Island. So when you hear people say Igboland is landlocked it is just political statement.
