According to a report by News Central TV on Friday, July 24, 2026, Abia State Governor Alex Otti said Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma cannot speak on behalf of other South East governors or the people of the region regarding support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
Otti maintained that every elected governor is entitled to express a personal political position, but such views should not be presented as the collective stance of the South East.
Speaking on the matter, Otti stressed the importance of distinguishing between individual opinions and the position of an entire region.
He said, “As a governor and as an individual, you can’t speak for everybody.”
The governor explained that while Uzodinma is free to declare his support for President Tinubu, he does not have the authority to make such declarations on behalf of other governors or the wider South East population.
Otti’s remarks come amid increasing political discussions over alliances and endorsements ahead of future electoral contests.
Political endorsements by influential office holders often attract significant public attention, particularly when they appear to represent the position of an entire geopolitical zone.
His comments underscored that each governor has an independent mandate and the freedom to decide his political direction without being bound by another governor’s public declaration.
The South East comprises five states, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo, each led by a democratically elected governor.
While governors may share common regional interests through various forums, political endorsements remain individual decisions unless a collective agreement is formally announced.
