According to a video posted on TVC News security analyst Tony Ofoyetan cautioned that while the United States has shown support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, its assistance has limits that Nigeria must clearly understand.
Ofoyetan made the remark while reacting to a letter from US President Donald Trump commending President Bola Tinubu for progress made against terrorist groups in the country.
Ofoyetan said Nigeria should appreciate the support it receives from Washington, but should not expect the United States to take on the physical burden of fighting terrorism within Nigerian territory.
He said American assistance is typically limited to non-combat support functions, which still hold significant value for Nigeria’s security operations.
In his words, Tony Ofoyetan said, “They help you with logistics. They help you with strategy, intelligence, logistics and strategy.
“They are most likely not going to be on the physical battle with you, but they can help you with the necessary intelligence.
“They can help you with logistics. They can help you with strategy. Now, but beyond that, when they help you to level X, it is you that will now have to move to level Z on your own.”
Ofoyetan added that Nigeria must also be cautious about the terms attached to foreign assistance, particularly around data sharing and access.
He said countries offering help often expect broad access to information in return, and Nigeria’s political and security leadership must know where to draw the line, even while accepting support that has clearly strengthened the country’s counterterrorism efforts……See More
