Human rights activist and political commentator Aisha Yesufu has stirred reactions on social media after questioning the Nigerian government’s reported funding of churches and mosques through public funds.
In a post shared on her X handle, Yesufu argued that the government has no business financing religious institutions, insisting that scarce public resources should instead be channelled into critical sectors such as education.
“What is the business of the State with religion? Why is the Nigerian government funding churches and mosques? Why should churches and mosques be in budget?” she asked.
The activist further lamented what she described as misplaced priorities, saying funds allocated to religious institutions could be better utilised to improve the country’s education sector.
“Monies that should be used to fund education. We are just not a serious country,” she added.
Her comments have generated widespread debate online, with many Nigerians expressing differing opinions on the role of government in supporting religious activities.
While some social media users agreed with Yesufu’s position, arguing that Nigeria’s secular status should prevent the government from allocating public funds to churches and mosques, others defended such spending, citing the government’s support for religious pilgrimages, worship centres, and other faith-based initiatives over the years.
