Chidi Odinkalu Reacts As Gov. Soludo Says 70% Of Inmates In Philippines Facility Were From S/East

Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights activist and former chairman of the national human rights commission has voiced his displeasure over the comments made by the governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo.

According to the statements which were shared on his official X handle on Monday June 29th, 2026 he pointed out that his comments were not only contentious, but harmful.

Governor Charles Soludo, it can be recalled, in a statement which triggered massive public debate, pointed out that 60% to 70% of inmates in Philippines correctional facilities were from the southeast region.

The observation, according to the Anambra State governor, was made during his visit to Asia. He also pointed out that similar statistics existed in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

Chidi Odinkalu, widely admired for his candid opinions, pointed out that putting such statistics to the public without proper verification was harmful.

He urged the governor to provide basic amenities to the people, especially the youths to avert future occurrences, as he argued that lack of opportunities pushed the youths into extreme conditions.

The comments from governor Charles Soludo had faced public backlash, however, the remarks by professor Chidi Odinkalu underscores the need to prioritize the welfare of the people, especially the youths.
