Asari Dokubo, a traditional ruler and activist from the Niger Delta, has spoken out about his relationships with IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, denying allegations that he became wealthy via the separatist movement’s financial backing.
In response to claims and public debates about money he allegedly received from Kanu while they were working together, Dokubo made the comments in a Facebook video that went viral on Thursday, June 17, 2026.
Dokubo claims that the ₦20 million he received from Kanu is the main point of discussion, but nobody takes into account the assistance and services he supposedly rendered in exchange.
“What is ₦20 million?” I asked Nnamdi Kanu. Can you tell me how many individuals I instructed on his behalf? “During the broadcast,” Dokubo stated.
In response to critics’ claims about the sum, the ex-militant commander said it paled in comparison to the worth of his work for Kanu. He argued that the public accounts have frequently disregarded the efforts and sacrifices he made in support of the IPOB leader.
According to Dokubo, his detractors purposefully omit crucial information about his connection to Kanu and his participation during that time.
As if it weren’t complicated enough, people can’t stop mentioning ₦20 million. I trained a lot of people for him; are you aware of that? The amount of resources I pledged are known to you, he enquired.
He insisted that people look at the bigger picture instead of fixating on the money, and he implied that the training and assistance he offered needed a lot of work.
If you ask Dokubo, the worth of his contributions was much higher than the sum he got, and he certainly never saw their relationship as based on money alone.
Twenty million rupees? Is that the sum you believe can cover all of my actions? “People are unaware of the complete narrative,” he stated.
Even though Dokubo didn’t name any specific people he said he coached, he insisted his role was far-reaching and shouldn’t be boiled down to a single money deal.
In addition, he seemed irritated by what he saw as ongoing efforts to cast him as someone who had unfairly profited from his friendship with Kanu.
All over, I hear people reiterating the ₦20 million tale. Neither the number of persons I trained nor the scope of my work for him are disclosed. According to him, all they do is bring up the money.
According to Dokubo, many individuals who have commented on the topic were not there at the time and thus do not have a correct grasp of what happened.
Those who insist on bringing up the payment are, in his view, blind to the reality of the partnership and his role in it.
No one who is speaking now was present. They have no idea what transpired. “They have no idea how much I did,” he declared.
