Even In The Last Election, We Begged Kwankwasos To Step Down For Atiku, But He Refused -Nafiu Gombe

According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, April 17, 2026, a factional leader of the African Democratic Congress, Nafi’u Bala Gombe, has criticised Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of failing to act in the interest of Northern Nigeria when he had the opportunity.

Gombe made the remarks during a media interview in Kano while responding to ongoing discussions about the political future of the region.

He dismissed recent engagements involving Kwankwaso, insisting that the former governor’s past actions undermined his credibility.

According to him, Kwankwaso and his allies once had the chance to reposition the North but failed to deliver meaningful leadership at the critical time.

He further alleged that Kwankwaso contributed to the political and economic challenges facing the region, stating that expectations placed on him by northern stakeholders were not met during his period of influence.

Gombe also referenced the last general election, claiming that efforts were made to persuade Kwankwaso to withdraw his presidential ambition in support of a broader northern consensus around former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but he declined and proceeded with his campaign under a lesser known political platform.

He argued that Kwankwaso’s decision fragmented northern votes, weakening the region’s bargaining power in the national contest and ultimately influencing the emergence of President Bola Tinubu.

“Even in the last election, we begged Kwankwaso to step down for the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. We asked him not to contest, but he refused and went ahead under a small party,” Gombe said.

He added that many in the North have not forgotten the political consequences of that decision and continue to view it as a setback for regional unity and influence.

Gombe concluded that Kwankwaso lacks the moral authority to speak on northern affairs, insisting that his actions have consistently reflected personal ambition over collective regional interest…..See More
