Nigerian music star Waje has opened up about the crucial role her family played in helping her navigate motherhood at a young age while pursuing her dreams.
Speaking during an appearance on Shaffy Bello TV, the singer reflected on how she became a mother at 18 and the strong support system that helped her continue her education and eventually build a thriving music career.
In a society where teenage pregnancy often attracts stigma and criticism, Waje said her family chose a different path — one of protection, encouragement, and practical help.
“Because I had my baby when I was really young, I was still 18 at the time. For a while my mom had my daughter because I had to go back to university and then started a career,” she said.
According to the singer, her mother and aunt stepped in immediately after the birth of her daughter, taking on much of the responsibility of raising the child during the early years so she could focus on school and personal growth.
She explained that she moved into her aunt’s home when the baby was just two months old. While she remained involved in caring for her daughter, her aunt played a major nurturing role due to her experience as a mother.
Waje also noted that although some people attempted to shame her for becoming a teenage mother, her family fiercely defended her.
Rather than allowing public criticism to discourage her, they created a safe and supportive environment that shielded her from negativity and enabled her to continue pursuing her ambitions.
Their collective effort, she said, helped lay the foundation for the success she enjoys today in the Nigerian music industry.
As her career progressed, Waje eventually took full responsibility for raising her daughter, who later moved in with her permanently at the age of 13……..See More
