Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has recalled an encounter with the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, saying he was surprised by the unusual silence that greeted him when he arrived at the Defence House in Lagos.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure while speaking on Untold Stories With Adesuwa, where he recounted how he was summoned to Lagos by Abacha during the military era. According to him, he received a call from Abacha and was subsequently provided with an aircraft to travel to Lagos for the meeting.
He said he proceeded directly to the Defence House after receiving the invitation, expecting the usual interactions and acknowledgements from people around him. However, Kwankwaso said the atmosphere at the facility was markedly different from what he anticipated.
“We had a call from Abacha in Lagos, he called me and they sent an aircraft and I went straight to Defence house in Lagos,” Kwankwaso said.
The former Kano State governor said what particularly surprised him was that nobody appeared to acknowledge his arrival or engage him in conversation.
“But what shocked me was that that day, nobody was talking saying ‘Hello Rabiu, Hello Speaker,’” he recalled.
