During an interview on TVC on Sunday, September 27, 2026, Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recounted his first encounter with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the questions he raised about allegations attributed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Okonkwo said he used the meeting to directly question Atiku about claims he had previously heard concerning the former vice president. According to him, he presented the allegations to Atiku and asked him to provide his explanation regarding the issues attributed to Obasanjo.
The ADC spokesperson said Atiku dismissed the allegations as an attempt to blackmail him. He further claimed that Atiku linked the accusations to his refusal to support efforts surrounding Obasanjo’s proposed third-term agenda while he was president.
Okonkwo recalled the encounter while explaining how he had personally challenged Atiku about the allegations rather than relying solely on reports from other sources.
According to him, “I cross-examined Atiku Abubakar. The first time I met Atiku Abubakar, I said, sir, this, this, and this I know about you. I said it myself. The former president Olusegun Obasanjo said this. I cited it. Who are you? He told me this is all blackmail because I refuse to support third-term agenda. He told me that Olusegun Obasanjo sent people to him and told him to support third term.”
The comments refer to the political controversy surrounding attempts during Obasanjo’s administration to extend his time in office beyond the constitutionally recognised two terms. The proposal was ultimately unsuccessful after failing to secure the required support in the National Assembly.
Okonkwo’s account presents his meeting with Atiku as an opportunity to seek clarification directly from a key figure involved in the political events of that period. His remarks also highlight the disagreements that existed among senior political figures over the third-term issue.
The ADC spokesperson did not present the exchange as a new allegation but as a recollection of a conversation he said took place when he first met Atiku.
