Professor Okey Ikechukwu, a political analyst and public affairs commentator, has said the composition of Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s inner circle challenges claims that the former Head of State surrounded himself exclusively with officers from his ethnic group.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, on Thursday, 30 July, 2026, while discussing “60 Years Later: Remembering Aguiyi Ironsi,” Ikechukwu argued that Ironsi’s leadership reflected a level of ethnic inclusiveness that is often overlooked in discussions about Nigeria’s first military Head of State.
According to Ikechukwu, one of the most prominent figures in Ironsi’s military hierarchy was the late General Murtala Muhammed, whom he described as a trusted lieutenant. He said this made the circumstances surrounding Ironsi’s assassination during the July 1966 counter-coup even more significant.
“If you look at the person’s around him, they were not from his own ethnic group. Murtala was his right-hand man, and it was those boys who gathered and killed him,” Ikechukwu said.
The political analyst maintained that the events leading to Ironsi’s death should be examined within their historical context rather than through ethnic narratives alone.
