State-recruited forest guards working alongside the Department of State Services (DSS), local hunters, and vigilantes have killed three bandits and freed nine kidnapped farmers in Obbo Aiyegunle in Ekiti LGA, Kwara State in a joint security operation.
One of the freed farmers, Umaru Muazu said in an interview with Arise TV, “After the day activities at about 4:57 p.m. I was trying to adjust my motorcycle compartment. I mounted the bike with my son, and as I was about to take off, suddenly some men came from nowhere and put guns to my head. A friend, a Yoruba man, came with his bike to help me. I told him to just run away and that I would be all right, but while he was still with me, those bandits came back in greater numbers, hit me and my friend, and we fell to the ground again,” he said.
Muazu revealed that the attack was initially carried out by four bandits, and that other traders had also rushed to his aid before his Yoruba friend arrived.
He said he urged all of them to flee, sensing that the bandits would return in force, a decision he credits with preventing a far larger abduction.
He noted that the bandits eventually returned, seized his friend’s motorcycle, and took both of them along with his son into captivity. Muazu said he is grateful that security operatives tracked them down and secured their release before the situation could get any worse.
