During an interview on Trust TV on Saturday, July 25, 2026, security consultant Dr. Stephen Okwori said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu bears the primary responsibility for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, arguing that the office of the Commander-in-Chief demands accountability rather than post-incident reactions.
Okwori said the president sought the nation’s highest office with the understanding of its enormous responsibilities. He stressed that the government’s focus should be on preventing attacks, particularly those involving schoolchildren and other vulnerable groups, instead of responding only after tragedies have occurred.
According to him, “Don’t forget that Mr. President asked for this job. In the course of asking for this job, he said nobody should pity him. Right? He’s the commander-in-chief. What that means is that the bulk lies on his table. It is not for him to continue to give directives when the disaster is done or after the disaster is done. We must see that children are protected.”
Okwori also expressed concern over the recurring cycle of mass kidnappings across the country. He argued that announcing the release of abducted victims only to witness fresh abductions shortly afterwards reflects the need for more effective security measures. He maintained that Nigeria must move beyond reactive responses and adopt strategies that prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place, especially those involving schoolchildren and rural communities.
