Igho Akeregha has rejected the government’s description of the recent release of abducted schoolchildren as a “rescue,” saying the term does not match how the children actually reappeared.
Speaking on SYMFONI TV, Akeregha said, “I must correct that description. There was no rescue. I do not agree that it was a rescue operation. They were released. Government itself has used the terms ‘released’ and ‘rescued’ interchangeably.”
He acknowledged that security forces were involved in bringing the children out of the forest, but insisted key details still needed explaining. “Yes, our security forces entered the forest and supervised the retrieval of the victims. But there are questions,” he said.
Akeregha pointed to the children’s clothing as one of the unresolved issues. He noted that the students were abducted while school was in session, so they should have still been in their school uniforms when freed. Instead, he said, they appeared in different civilian clothes that fit them properly, raising questions about who supplied the outfits and how they matched each child’s size so precisely.
“Where did those clothes come from? Who prepared clothing in the exact sizes required for every child? Were the clothes already waiting for them? Did they bathe before appearing in public? These are legitimate questions,” he said.
