Waje became visibly emotional as she recounted the moment she revealed her teenage pregnancy to her mother, describing it as one of the most difficult conversations of her life. She explained that she had successfully hidden the pregnancy for five months by overcompensating with housework and good behavior. Finally, one morning after family devotion, as her mother was preparing to leave for work, Waje gathered the courage to confess, simply stating, “Mom, I want to tell you something. I’m pregnant.”
During her tearful recollection on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Waje described her mother’s reaction as silent and still. Her mother didn’t scream, didn’t call her a disgrace, didn’t react with the anger or disappointment that many young girls in similar situations experience. She simply told Waje, “Go and sleep,” and remained seated in the same spot. This silence, Waje explained, was when she truly understood the gravity of what she had done and the pain she had caused her mother.
What made the moment even more poignant was what happened next. Waje’s younger brothers got ready for school, and normally her mother would have left for work and Waje would lock the door behind them. But on this day, her mother remained frozen in the same position, not moving, not speaking. It was this stillness, this visible processing of shock and heartbreak, that hit Waje harder than any words or punishment could have. Waje said: “So one day after morning devotion, my mom was getting ready to go to work. I called them to sat her down. I said, mom, I want to tell you something. She said, what’s it? I’m pregnant. She kept quiet. And I said, and I don’t want to take the baby out. She said, she didn’t say anything again. She said, go and sleep. By the time my brothers woke up, I rather got ready for school and they were about to leave. I would usually wake up or she would call me to lock the door.
