Yoruba Nollywood actor and skit maker Kehinde Ganiyu, popularly known as Ijoba Lande, has recounted a harrowing encounter during his days as a night security guard, revealing how an unusual side hustle may have inadvertently saved his life during an armed robbery.
Speaking on Jeff Omolewa’s official YouTube channel, Ijoba Lande described a terrifying night around 2010 when armed robbers invaded the street where he was stationed.
Rather than being at his post, he had ventured into the bush to collect snails, a routine he had adopted to supplement his modest N18,000 monthly salary. Selling the snails provided extra income, often earning him thousands of naira.
The actor explained that he was deep in the bush, searching with his torchlight, when gunshots suddenly rang out.
Initially, he thought one of his colleagues had fired, but the screams that followed revealed the grim reality: robbers were attacking.
Acting quickly, he switched off his light, hid among the bushes, and remained motionless to avoid detection.
In his words: “When the armed robbers came to the street where I was working as a security guard, I wasn’t at my post because I had gone to gather snails. Suddenly, I heard gunshots. At first, I thought it was the other guard we were working with who fired, until I heard him screaming. So I hid in the bush and turned off the lights I was using to find snails.
