Bright Chimezie has revealed that his father insisted he should attend university and even cried about his refusal, but he was determined to pursue his music career instead. The highlife legend disclosed that by the time his father was pressuring him about university education in the late 1970s, he was already deeply involved in music practice and had recorded his first cultural album.

He stated that although he sometimes wonders what life would have been like with a university education, he does not regret his decision to follow his passion for music.
Bright Chimezie said: “Then 1977, 1978, I think that was when I had my WAEC. 1978, 1979 was when I finished secondary school. My father insisted I should go to university.
