My Driver Said You Are Not Like Our People Because You Help My Kids Grow And Succeed Like You -Shield

During his explosive interview, Henry Shield shared a personal story that he believes illustrates a deeper problem within the northern social and political structure. He spoke about his long-serving driver, a man he has employed since 2004, and the conversations they have had.

He told Shayon Okinbaloye on the Mic On Podcast that his driver once told him, “You are not like our people.” When asked why, the driver explained that Shield wants his children to grow and succeed, a level of support he feels he would never receive from the northern elites.

Shield argued that this is a deliberate strategy by some in the northern leadership. He believes they fear that if the children of the poor are allowed to rise, they will grow up to be just like them, challenging their authority and privilege.

In Henry Shield’s words: “I have a driver from Maiduguri. He’s a Kanuri by tribe. I employed him in 2004. He has been with me up to now. Now he’s old. I want to use his son because I also trained him. His son graduated. So when I was helping him when he was training these children, he said, ‘You are not like our people.’ I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Because you want my son or my children to be like you.
