Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has said the principles of Islam place greater importance on justice, competence, and fairness in leadership than on the religious identity of those holding public office. He argued that good governance should always take precedence over religious considerations in politics.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Adebayo said many people misunderstood the debate surrounding the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket because they focused on religion instead of the responsibilities expected of leaders. According to him, the true test of leadership is the ability to govern with justice and integrity.
He explained that Islamic teachings encourage the selection of leaders based on merit and character rather than religious affiliation alone. He maintained that those entrusted with public office must possess the competence and moral qualities needed to serve society fairly.
During the interview, Adebayo said, “Islam Does Not Reward Leaders Because of Religion; It Demands Justice, Competence, and Fairness Above Everything Else.”
He stated that these principles should guide leadership in every democratic society.
The SDP presidential candidate noted that, in his view, Muslims seek justice through politics rather than political power based solely on religious identity. He argued that leadership should be judged by how well it protects the rights and welfare of the people.
According to Adebayo, Islamic principles discourage the appointment of individuals who are not qualified for positions of responsibility. He said public offices should be occupied by those who have demonstrated the capacity to lead with honesty, fairness, and accountability.
He also stated that leadership should never be based on favoritism or personal expectations of reward. Instead, he said leaders should act in the interest of the wider public and ensure that justice is available to every citizen without discrimination.
Adebayo maintained that Nigerians are more interested in responsible governance than in the religious identity of elected officials. He argued that citizens expect leaders who can improve security, strengthen the economy, and deliver justice across the country.
The SDP flag bearer further stated that governments should be evaluated by their actions rather than by the faith of those occupying public office. According to him, fairness, transparency, and competence are the qualities that ultimately determine the success of any administration.
He concluded that political discussions should focus on leadership performance instead of religious labels. Adebayo maintained that justice, competence, and fairness remain the most important standards by which any government should be judged……See More
