I’m Igbo Man; We Grew Up Hearing About Mistrust About Yorubas And Some Of Us May Die With It -Ozigbo

A former governorship candidate in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has spoken about the deep-seated mistrust that exists between some ethnic groups in Nigeria, particularly between Igbos and Yorubas.

Speaking during an interview with SYMFONI TV, Ozigbo said many Igbo people grew up hearing narratives that created suspicion toward the Yoruba ethnic group, noting that such beliefs were passed down through generations. According to him, these perceptions were shaped by historical experiences and repeated conversations within communities while growing up.

He explained that for many people raised in that environment, the mistrust became deeply rooted in their thinking. Ozigbo stated that some individuals may never completely let go of those beliefs because they were ingrained from childhood. “I’m an Igbo man; we grew up hearing about mistrust about Yorubas and some of us may die with it,” he said, while stressing the importance of dialogue and understanding among Nigerians.

Ozigbo added that despite the historical sentiments, there is a need for citizens across ethnic lines to move beyond old suspicions and work toward unity and national development.
