Precious Godwin, a young woman from Benin, Edo State, has narrated how she was allegedly deceived by her friend, Sonia, into travelling to Mali under the guise of pursuing a business opportunity, only to discover that she had been sold into prostitution.
According to Godwin, she trusted Sonia’s promises and agreed to make the journey without knowing the true purpose of the trip.
Speaking during an interview on the Abdullahi Tahir Balarae Podcast, Godwin recounted what happened after she and the other girls arrived in Mali. She alleged that Sonia handed her over to a woman identified as Madam Gold, who took charge of them upon their arrival. Godwin said she initially believed she would begin a legitimate business but quickly realised that the situation was far different from what she had been told.
Recounting the encounter, she said, “When we got there, we finished eating and bathing, Madam Gold came and asked me what is my name and I said ‘My name is Precious’. She said you can’t answer your real name here. I told her, please can I call Sonia?. She said yes.”
Godwin said she became alarmed when Madam Gold instructed her not to use her real name, a development that deepened her suspicion that something was wrong.
